Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.
Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?
Hi there, I’m Karen Tomlinson .Thanks for inviting me to your blog. Age is always a secret!!
Fiona: Where are you from?
I’m from England in the UK. I live in a town called Derby, which is in the midlands. It’s a part of the UK full of beautiful hills and wild countryside.
Fiona: A little about your self (ie, your education, family life, etc.).
I trained as a nurse and now work full time in medical education and resuscitation training. I live with my hubby and have two wonderful daughters who are twins and are gorgeous. I also have a Dalmatian called Poppy. She’s a little crazy and stubborn as they come!
Fiona: Tell us your latest news.
My latest news is I recently became a USA Today best selling author. I have just sent Book 3 in The Goddess and the Guardians series for beta reading and am hoping to release it end of May beginning of June time.
Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?
It all began when I started telling my girls a bedtime story and it got to a point where I wanted to make it more and create a stunning fantasy world. Once I’d got the idea in my head I wanted to share it with other people. I have always been an avid reader and had tried to write before but had never had the time to complete a book. After changing my job to more regular hours I was able to follow this dream.
Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?
LoL! I suppose I do now, having released three books in the last 14 months.
Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?
I think I’ve answered that already. Short answer is my children.
Fiona: How did you come up with the title?
I honestly went through so many titles but because of what happens between the characters and all the bonds Diamond and Hugo share this was a really fitting title.
Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?
I’m not sure I have a specific style. Writing in any genre is challenging. With fantasy fitting all the detail and world building in and merging it with the story and characters without making the word count too long is the biggest challenge. My first book was 250000 words. **coughs** I had to cut it drastically!
Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
It’s fantasy; utterly and completely made up so…nothing.
Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?
Nope I write whenever I get a spare moment.
Fiona: Who designed the covers?
Deranged Doctor Designs.
Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
That life isn’t always cut and dried, emotions and circumstances influence people and not always for the best but it doesn’t make them bad, it makes them a victim of circumstance.
Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest? Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?
I adore Sarah J Maas books. I love the way she can make her characters believable and hateful and likeable all at the same time. My next favourite is Rachel e Carter. I love her Black Mage series.
Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.
My friend Jenny. She has given me support since I started this journey. I have dedicated my most recent release. The prequel to The Godess and the Guardians series: A Bond of Destiny and Dragons, to her. (She doesn’t know yet, but the paperbacks are up now so I’ve ordered her one)
Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?
I certainly see it as a business. It can’t support me at all financially at the moment but no success happens overnight. Its something I adore doing so hopefully I will be able to continue it and it will eventually become a career.
Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
Nope not at all. I’m very happy with it.
Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?
I’m always learning. How to write things in a more concise manner is an on going process.
Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?
Ooh, I have never thought about it. I’d have to look into that far more…. Sorry.
Fiona: Any advice for other writers?
Never give up. Writing is hard work and it doesn’t stop when you’ve written a book. You are a business when you have released your masterpiece and like any other small business you have to work at it and not expect a quick return. Some people are extremely lucky or far more savvy and get overnight success though, so who knows? Listen to reviews that are helpful but don’t let negative or reviews aimed at you personally, destroy you. No one should be given that power over your self-esteem or confidence just because they don’t like your writing.
Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?
No, except buy my books, they’re an awesome fantasy read! Oh, and if you like to chat come join me on my Facebook group, KarenTomlinson’s Silver GUardians.
Fiona: What book are you reading now?
I’m not reading at the minute because I am editing book 3 and writing book 4…busy, busy!!
Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?
Not specifically, but I saved my pocket money so I could visit the book shop opposite the supermarket where my mum did her weekly shop. I managed to buy the whole famous five set and loved them. Then I read my mum’s Mills andBook books and my dad’s Wilbur Smith’s books.
Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?
Seeing other people laugh and cry. It’s infectious.
Fiona: Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?
Sarah J Maas, so I can pick her brains about writing and how she makes her characters so awesome.
Wilbur Smith…ditto to above, I loved Taita in River God.
Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?
Yes, I love sports. I have been doing Shotokan karate since I was thirteen. I have a knee injury at the mo but love running, mountain biking and walking too. Of course, I adore reading too, and I decorate cakes! (When I have time)
Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?
I love watching films and TV that take me away from reality. Supernatural, walking dead etc. Films: I love big block buster types that aren’t too deep and depressing.
Fiona: Favorite foods, colors, music?
Any food. I’m a bit of a foodie but I do love cheese! Very bad… Blue is my favourite colour, it can be rich and deep or light and happy. Music depends on my mood. I have eclectic tastes but I love dance music to keep me happy whilst doing the housework etc and my twins who are twelve keep me up on the latest stuff. They’re very useful! I also love folk, especially to write emotional scenes to.
Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?
Just continue with my full time job I guess, oh, and go to the gym more!
Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?
Ooh, I’d rather not think about that… Something about my girls I think.
