Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?

I’m Eileen Troemel and my age is fluid… In February I’ll be 14 or 56.

Fiona: Where are you from?

Wisconsin

Fiona: A little about your self (ie,  your education, family life, etc.).

My first instinct is to tell you to go read my poetry.  I’m sarcastic, snarky, and direct.  My statistics include two bachelor’s degrees – one in business and one in writing.  I love to learn.  I love to crochet and publish my patterns.  My husband and I have been together for over 38 years and we have three amazing daughters.

Fiona: Tell us your latest news.

In editing, I have a novel done called Seven Sisters.  It’s a post plague aliens invade story which is not what you expect.  I’m currently writing Wild Magic 3.  It’s the conclusion to my Wild Magic series.  It’s started and my main character in the first part is a man who’s trying to redeem himself.  He’s done a wrong thing for the right reasons.  This book is focusing on him but there will be four characters who join him and I’ll see where they take me.

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

I fell in love with writing when I was 8.I dabbled until I was a teenager.  When my kids came along, I stopped writing though I still told stories.  In my late thirties, I didn’t like me anymore.  I started writing bad poetry and then not so bad poetry.  From there, the writing grew.  I wrote my first novel, self help book, and three poetry books.  I tried the traditional route to get published and got offers but no follow through from the publishers.  I published my first novel in 2014 and haven’t looked back.

Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I’ve always considered myself a writer.I now consider myself a professional writer who attempts to make money while writing stories – hopefully entertaining ones.

Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?

From the time I was twelve I read Harlequin romance novels.  I cannot count the number of romance novels I read so I started with a contemporary romance novel.  It took ten years and LOTS of revisions.

Fiona: How did you come up with the title?

Titles are tough.  Sometimes they’re inspired.  Wild Magic sort of came when I tried to define my main character’s magical abilities.  Hostile Magic I sat and did a word association.  It took several words before I hit on Hostile.  I like it immediately but continued with the word associate to see if something else felt better.  I’ve also asked beta readers what they think.  There’s always the working title – these are whatever I think of first but that generally isn’t the final title.

Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?

I like my happy ever after.  In the end, my characters are going to find love and be happy.  Now in some books this is not necessarily some picture perfect version of this.  My writing style – I like strong women even if they are flawed or have suffered damage.  I like strong men who help their women be stronger.

Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

For all my books, there are bits and pieces which are influenced by real life and real people.  I’ve had people say write me into your stories – one became an assassin and another a witch.  Draconian Peace has a lot of racial tension which was influenced by the racial tension in our society.

Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?

While I don’t have to travel, I find when I drive long distances, my mind shifts and I get the best ideas.

Fiona: Who designed the covers?

Sweet N Spicy Designs

Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I don’t start out with a message but one generally finds it’s way into the novel.

Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?  Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?

I don’t have a favorite author.  There are several who I cannot put their books down.  My most recent discoveries are Thea Harrison and Amelia Oliver.  Their books are stay up all night to read.

Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.

When I started looking at social media, I asked other authors how they did it and what steps had to be taken.  There were several who were kind enough to hold my hand and answer all my questions.  Additionally, as I looked at my product I reached out to a more well known author and asked for help. She took a lot of time and helped me with resources and advice.

Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?

Yes.  At this point it’s not self-supporting but yes, it’s a career.

Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

Hostile Magic is a sequel.  There’s a lot of difference between the first and second book.  I love them both.

Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

Keep writing.  I struggled with the story.  It didn’t flow as easily as my other books.  At the same time, I learned to write a scene at a time and to keep writing.  I discovered that some of what I consider extra actually filled in the story and added depth to it.

Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

For the two women in the series Wild Magic, I’d want strong actors who can pull off both power and vulnerability.  For the men – they need to be sexy but not macho.

Fiona: Any advice for other writers?

Read a lot and write from your heart and soul.  For your rough draft, don’t worry about grammar or spelling – just get the story down.  The rest is editing.

Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

Thank you.  Thank you for trying me as an author.  Thank you for buying my books.  Thank you for your kind words in reviews.

Fiona: What book are you reading now?

Arcs for other authors

Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?

My earliest memories of books were Paddington the Bear and The Witch Next Door and Clifford the Big Red Dog.  I also read Pippi Longstocking, Laura Ingals Wilder books.

Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?

Laugh – snarkiness, sarcasm, but not slapstick.  Cry – it depends – it has to feel real.

Fiona: Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?

I’d like to meet my great grandmother.  She travelled from Ireland at 16 and was feisty from what I understand.

Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?

Yes – I love to crochet and paint.  I’m great at crocheting and horrible at painting.  I’ve crocheted for over 40 years and even publish my patterns. Painting – I love to do but my pictures are not all that good.

Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?

I don’t really watch a lot of tv.  Movies I watch a lot of but it’s more about quality than an individual show.

Fiona: Favorite foods, colors,  music?

Favorite food – my middle daughter’s cooking.  Colors – all of them.  Music – I’ll listen to anything but mostly when I’m working I listen to Classical.

Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

Be dead.

Fiona: You only have 24 hours to live how would you spend that time?

The right answer is to spend time with family but I’m too practical for that – I’d probably work on writing and getting things organized for when I’m dead.

Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?

No headstone so nothing.

Fiona: Do you have a blog or website readers can visit for updates, events and special offers?
