Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name.

Hi Fiona! How are you? I’m J.Z. Foster.

 Fiona: Where are you from?

I was born and raised in Ohio, but spent nearly my entire adult life in Korea. In a lot of ways, I’m a hybrid weirdo between those two cultures.

Fiona: A little about your self (ie,  your education, family life, etc.).\

My mother is Lori Foster, a NYT’s Romance writer, she always encouraged me to write.
As for education, I have a BA in Criminal Justice from Eastern Kentucky University.

Fiona: Tell us your latest news.

My latest book is Harrowing Horrors: Hanged Man, which I wrote with my mom under the name L.L. Foster, and my buddy Justin M. Woodward. It’s the first in a series of horror short stories. Harrowing Horrors II: Shades of the Abyss is due out soon!

Anyone interested in trying out my work can get Harrowing Horrors: Demon Weed, a free story, at my website JZFoster.com

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

Oh, I began putting pen to paper (fingers to keys?) a long time ago. I’ve been a storyteller ever since I could remember. It’s just fun!

Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

Hard to say, I’m not sure! Perhaps when my first book came out? Even then I’m not sure.

Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?

I like to keep the reader guessing. I always prefer for my story to make people think it’s going in one direction, only to head in another.

As for challenging, I’m not sure! A lot of it is challenging!

Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

I would say each of the main characters has a slice of J.Z. in them. Of my first three books (Witch Hunter, Wicked Ones, Mind Wreck) I could identify with each of the protagonist, they were all just different shades of me.

Fiona: Who designed the covers?

I use a variety of artist, from Francois Vaillancourt to Andy Sciazko. It just depends on the feel I want for each cover.

Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I suppose the most common theme in my novels are that normal people can do extraordinary (sometimes evil) things. Typically my protagonist are just average people that are pushed into insane situations.

Fiona: Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?

My favorite writer isn’t a novelist, but a comic book writer. Mark Millar is amazing! I definitely think his anything can happen style has influenced my writing. Strangely though, despite my favorite writers being comic book writers, I have no real interest in writing comic books.

Fiona: Any advice for other writers?

I most often hear authors complain that they want to write something but it never materializes.

Just write! Even if its crap, just write!

Now, step 2 after you have that, EDIT THE CRAP! If you do hammer out a book, don’t just throw it out without edits. None of my books have come out pretty with my first draft. They need multiple edits before I get them where I want them. Treat your writing like a business, and a product that represents you.

Fiona: What book are you reading now?

Book 3 of my Harrowing Horrors series, Harrowing Horrors III: Crooked House. After that, it’s Witch Hunter 3: The Lands of Arcadia.

Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?

I love board games and comic books. That’s pretty much it right now because I have a 2 year old running around!

Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?

My wife and I watch things in all genres, but I have to say my current favorite TV show is The Magicians. Check it out on Netflix and SciFi!

Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

Ahh! I don’t want to imagine it! I honestly have no idea.

Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?

I won’t have one! I’ll be cremated and tossed into the wind. If people ever want to visit me after I’m gone, they can read one of my books.

Fiona: Do you have a blog or website readers can visit for updates, events and special offers?

https://www.jzfoster.com/ is my website, and it has a few stories for free! I also do most my hanging out at https://www.facebook.com/JZFosterAuthor .
