Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.
Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?
Katie Melko , 32
Fiona: Where are you from?
Fiona: A little about your self (ie, your education, family life, etc.).
I’ve been a dental hygienist for 10 years and have a Masters degree in Science. I’m married and have fur-children, 2 dogs (Noel and Mason) and 2 cats (Midnight and Shadow)
Fiona: Tell us your latest news.
I just released a new romance novel, “Bottle of Uncertainty” and the second book in the “Paw Elementary Series: Roxy’s Adventure to the Hair Salon”
Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?
I fell in love with writing in 2016 when I was in my Masters degree program. I found it so enjoyable and I felt that I could write educational children books to help families deal with potential scary first experiences.
Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?
When I published my first article in a magazine I finally considered my self a writer.
Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?
My career as a dental hygienist. My first book is about going to the dentist for the first time. From 10 years of experience, I compiled all that I heard from children and decided to write a show-do- tell book to help introduce children to the dentist before going there.
Fiona: How did you come up with the title?
I lost Roxy (she was my first fur child) at the age of 12 and I decided to make her the main character to help her memory live on in the pages of this book. And I want kids to see Roxy’s experience as an adventure to make it seem more fun than scary.
Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?
I write romance suspense stories and educational books. I find it challenging sometimes to keep my books short. I feel when you educate, it requires more details.
Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
My children books are very realistic except for the fact that animals are doing it. My romance novel is very relatable to real life and I have used personal stories from my life and friends/family in my books.
Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?
I don’t necessary travel to craft my stories, but I do find it helpful to step away and do something else to help get out of writers block.
Fiona: Who designed the covers?
Roksana Oslizlo is my children’s book illustrator, she is from Poland. My romance novel cover artist is Saad Ali is from Pakistan.
Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Yes, I want readers to know that no matter what happens in life, you can still make choices to change your life, you deserve happiness, and to keep pushing to make your goals / dreams a reality.
Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest? Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?
Kristen Hannah is my favorite, I love how real her stories are, I love her writing style and I appreciate the way she writes emotion.
Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.
Fox 61 News has helped me reach more people by having me on their morning news to discuss my books.
Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?
Yes, right now, its part time and I work as an RDH fulltime. In the future I hope that I can work full time as an author.
Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
No, everything I have done, has helped mold me in the direction I currently am in. Change would alter that path, and that is not something I would wish to do!
Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?
Yes, I had to do so much research on vineyards and animals to make sure I had my facts correct! I also learned how to write emotions/ flash back scenes better.
Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?
No, I don’t think so. I don’t know that I have the talent for on screen!

Keep pushing, find your passion and let that drive you to your success.
