Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?

Hi there! I’m Kimberley O’Malley, and don’t you now you should never ask a lady her age? LOL! 52 next month…

 Fiona: Where are you from?

I am from Scranton, Pennsylvania originally, but I live near Charlotte, NC now.

Fiona: A little about yourself (i.e., your education, family life, etc.).

I grew up as the youngest and only girl…a position I loved and abused daily. I was raised by a single Mom and my Grandmother, two very strong women, even though they didn’t see themselves that way. I went to undergraduate at Saint Joseph’s University (The Hawk will never die!) in Philadelphia. I have been married almost 24 years, and we have two children. They’re both in high school, which is less fun than it sounds.

Fiona: Tell us your latest news.

Coming Back, the last in my Contemporary Romance series, Windsor Falls, releases on October 30th. Woo Hoo!! This is my 9th book. I also hope to release my next Cozy Mystery by the end of 2019.

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

I never meant to be a writer. I was however a voracious reader my whole life. In 2002, we waited to adopt our oldest child from Russia. And by wait, I mean just that. Everyday, we waited for the phone to ring telling us it was our turn to travel. We’d been told to expect to go by the beginning of July. We went at the end of September. By mid-July, I was losing it. One day, I came home from work and started writing. No intention. No plan. Just started doing that everyday, and I’d written 110,000 words in 3 weeks. If only I could do that now…but writing was therapy for me. I never did anything with it until we moved to NC in 2015 then published that first book, Coming Home, in 2017.

Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

Great question! Writing has always come easily to me. I made money in college fixing other people’s awful papers. I remember the first time I saw my very first published paperback. I may have cried. But the very first time was probably at the Romantic Times conference in Atlanta in 2017. Coming Home had been out about 6 weeks. I checked in and then got on the elevator, and as I was putting my name tag thing around my neck, the person next to me said, “Oh, you’re an author!” I looked behind me. Mind you, there were only the two of us in the elevator. But hearing it aloud, for the first time, was phenomenal.

Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?

See above. Writing was an escape or therapy for me.

Fiona: How did you come up with the title?

Titles have always been easy for me. They sort of just come to me. Not so much for blurbs…

Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?

I am a pantser, by which I mean I do not outline ahead of time. When I start a new book, I pretty much know how it starts and ends. The rest is up in the air. Things come to me as I wrote. In fact, I’m always afraid it won’t come to me anymore. The challenge lies in time management. I work full time and have a family, so finding the time is tough.

Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

The story itself is all me. I do borrow heavily from real life. I take bits and pieces of people and things I know and see. For instance, I LOVE flip flops. You just might find a few of my characters wearing them.

Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?

I love to travel and do as much as I can. I love to see new places and meet new people. Again, I incorporate everything I see into my books. We went to Hawaii this summer, and I decided on the planeride there that I needed to set a book there.

Fiona: Who designed the covers?

All my covers are designed by the amazing Rebecca Pau of The Final Wrap. She’s brilliant and fabulous, and I would be lost without her.

Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

My Contemporary Romances involve a lot of the daily things that people go through; all the difficulties. But they always have a happy ending. That’s why we read, right? For the feels and the HEA? I also write strong female characters, which I think is important. Heroines shouldn’t be sitting around waiting for a hero to rescue them. Sometimes, like in my Saving Quinn, the hero needs rescuing.

Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.

My best source of support is other Indie authors. I have a great bunch of other women who write. And even though most of us are far apart from each other, we all know we are there for each other.

Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?

I would love to write full time. That’s not an option for me currently. Maybe someday…

Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

Hmmm…this new release has been the hardest to write by far. But that’s because I was writing it last summer when my Mom died. The book centers around a woman who lost her love and struggles to come back to her life. Writing about grief while living it proved impossible. I am so happy to have finally finished it.

Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

 Perseverance

Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

HAHA!! Wouldn’t that be great? Somebody very tall and blonde. Maybe Nicole Kidman???

Fiona: Any advice for other writers?

Listen to Nike; just do it. We are our own worst enemies. Sit down and write. Do it daily. Keep pushing yourself.

Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

The fact that anyone wants to read a book I have written continued to blow me away. I hope it always will. Readers have no idea how much effect they have on authors.

Fiona: What book are you reading now?

I recently discovered Annie Dyer, who is the bomb! I inhaled her Callaghan Green series and have now moved onto her Severton Search & Rescue series.

Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?

Not specifically, but it probably had a horse or dog in it. I very clearly remember the Misty of Chincoteague series by Marguerite Henry.

Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?

I laugh constantly. I find the world a funny place. Well, the world is really a terrifying place, so humour keeps me sane. I also cry very easily, much to my children’s chagrin. I cry at cheesycommercials, like the ones where the long-lost son comes home and wakes them up on Christmas morning.

Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?

I am a soccer Mom!!! And I sued to show dogs when I had time. I also love to travel.

Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?

I have very eclectic taste. I am currently obsessed with Supernatural. I never watched it until about a month ago, so I am binge watching. Others I have loved are, in random order:Gilmore Girls, Friends, Alias, Haven, Lucifer, anything medical or crime, Blue Murder, Criminal Minds, Mind Hunters, etc

Fiona: Favorite foods, colors, music?

Like many people, I love the foods which are worst for me—pizza, ice cream, pasta, Mexican, anything sweet. I love a lot of different colors, but my favorites are in the blue family. Periwinkle is my very favorite color. Music depends on my mood. I love everything from classic rock to New Age. I listen to Enya when I am sleeping. I do not listen to music when I write, unlike many authors.

Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

Travel

Fiona: You only have 24 hours to live how would you spend that time?

Reading all the books and eating everything bad for me.

Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?

 I made a difference.

Fiona: Do you have a blog or website readers can visit for updates, events and special offers? My author website is
