Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?

Hello! I’m Audrey Pflugrath, but I write under my maiden name Audrey J. Cole. I’m 33.

Fiona: Where are you from?

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, near Seattle. I lived in Australia from 2013-2018, and now am back living in eastern Washington.

Fiona: A little about your self (ie,  your education, family life, etc.).

I’m a registered nurse, a wife, and have 2 little kids. I’m a USA Today bestselling author of Emerald City Thrillers, which are crime and medical thrillers set in Seattle.

Fiona: Tell us your latest news.

My latest book, Viable Hostage, hit the USA Today bestseller list earlier this month after its release as part of limited-timeebook box set titled Do No Harm, a collection of medical thrillers. I’ll be releasing the book as a single title late October.

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

I started writing my first book eight years ago after reading a news article about death row inmate Christian Longo, who was petitioning to donate his organs after execution. It gave me the idea for The Recipient, my debut thriller.

Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

It took a while, but I think after I published my first book. Definitely when I started writing the second.

Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?

I read a news article about Christian Longo, an Oregon death row inmate who’d been convicted of killing his wife and three children. He was in the news for seeking some retribution for his crimes by requesting to donate his organs after execution. It got the wheels spinning in my head for my first book.

Fiona: How did you come up with the title?

I titled it The Recipient probably halfway through writing it. Normally, my titles come naturally after I’ve written a fair amount of the story. My titles typically stem from the main character or theme of the book.

Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?

I like to keep it moving. I don’t ever want my readers to get bored. I try to keep the same fast-moving pace throughout the book. If I feel the story starting to slow down as I’m writing it, I try to take a break and come back when I can bring some fresh energy back into my writing.

Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

The ideas for my first two books came from true crime. The idea for my third Emerald City Thriller, The Summer Nanny, came a tiny bit from my own experience. So I think there’s a mix of fiction and reality.

Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?

All my books take place in Seattle, which I’ve grown up around am pretty familiar with. My second book partly takes place in the town where we were living in Australia at the time I wrote it. It’s made it so that, with a small amount of research, I feel that I can set the scenes pretty well.

Fiona: Who designed the covers?

My husband has designed all my covers.

Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I want people to be transported and drawn into the story in a way that keeps them wanting to return to it until they’ve finished. I want to give my readers that suspense of needing to find out what’s going to happen next.

Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?

Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

No. 😊

Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

I learned how to write fast. I had a deadline of about three months to write my latest book, and I did it. I was surprised to find that my first draft was as good as when I take a lot longer to write it.

Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

Hmm…I would want Cuba Gooding Jr. to play Sergeant Wade McKinnon. Chris Pine to play Detective Blake Stephenson. And Bryce Dallas Howard to play Detective Tess Richards.

Fiona: Any advice for other writers?

Be persistent and consistent. Try to write every day. And read as much as you can.

Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

I’m writing the fifth Emerald City Thriller, where Detective Tess Richards takes the lead…

Fiona: What book are you reading now?

I’m just finishing Immanuel’s Veins by Ted Dekker and have three books lined up to read next:The Numbers Killer by Jenifer Ruff, Maya Hope by Dr. Timothy Browne, and Double Blind by Dan Alatorre.

Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?

My love for mystery and thrillers started with reading Nancy Drew as a kid.

Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?

My children make me laugh almost every day. Thinking about what makes me cry is a little harder.

Fiona: Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?

Ann Rule. I have read almost all her true crime books that took place in the Pacific Northwest. She died in 2015.

Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?

My kids are one and three so they keep me pretty busy. After they go to bed I’m usually writing. But, when I have time, I like to play the piano or go for a long walk.

Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?

True crime documentaries, a good thriller, anything made in the 1940’s, and, because I’m an intellectual, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills 😉

Fiona: Favorite foods, colors,  music?

Seafood, blue, country

Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

Probably take up running and play the piano a lot more

Fiona: You only have 24 hours to live how would you spend that time?

 With my family

Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?

Beloved wife and mother
