Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?

Brina Brady is my author name. I’m sixty-nine and half years old.

Fiona: Where are you from?

I was born and raised in New Jersey and moved to California when I was twenty-three. I was married two times and single for seventeen years in between marriages. When I retired from teaching, I moved to Indiana. And no, I don’t like Indiana, but my children and grandchildren are located there. I miss California.

Fiona: A little about yourself (ie, your education, family life, etc.).

I have three children and four grandchildren. I received my Master’s Degree in Reading and Secondary Education. I also have BA degree in history and English. I have a Reading Specialist credential.  I attended California State University in Long Beach and UCLA. I’m certified to teach English, history, math, and government. I taught high school for thirty years and now I’m retired. I published my first book Rent Me in May 2014.

Fiona: Tell us your latest news.

I’m working on my seventeenth book.

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

I began writing when I was four. I wrote plays for my friends to enact. The why is because I need to write as much as I need to breathe.

Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I wrote a book when I was twelve, so I considered myself a writer then.

Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?

I read an article about gay men being beaten in Russia for being gay.

Fiona: How did you come up with the title?

Rent Me was about a rent boy who fell in love with a Russian mobster.

Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?

I write in third person restricted with two alternating POVs. I prefer one POV, but the readers like alternating. I don’t always give equal chapters for each partner.

Fiona: How much of the book is realisticand are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

All of it is realistic in my head, but I’d say about 30% based on conversations I had with Doms and subs.

Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?

I never had to travel to write, but I did visit Ireland and after I wrote a series set in Ireland. The Internet is wonderful for researching.

Fiona: Who designed the covers?

Most of my covers were designed by Book Cover by Design, but I have been designingmy ownsince last year and this year.

Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

There’s a special place for everyone with someone they love.

Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?  Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?

I like tons of authors and various styles of writing, but I prefer past tense.

Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.

Sandy Hood Rivers is my best friend in the entire world. We started out together writing when we were young mothers. We wrote every day across from one another on my kitchen table when our children went to school. At night, we discussed our writing at a coffee shop while our husbands babysat the kids. We broke the record for watching The Warriors when we were supposed to be returning empty bottles for cash. I know we watched was over fifty times. Well, we had the lines memorized.

Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?

I’m retired so it’s part-time income, but full-time work. I taught for thirty years and loved it. I love writing too.

Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

No. I don’t want to change anything.

Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

I have a poor memory so I need notes attached to my manuscript while I’m in the writing process.

Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

I want Gerald Butler as Dmitri Dubrowski from Rent Me.

Fiona: Any advice for other writers?

Fall in love with your characters. If you care about them, readers will. Use a picture for character inspiration and list characteristics. Write every day. Find a supportive friend who will give you feedback. Later when you complete the book, find betas, and an editor. Read writing books and join online writing courses and join author groups.

Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

Without readers, my characters wouldn’t come to life around the world. I love them.

Fiona: What book are you reading now?

I’m reading BDSM fiction, and political non-fiction.

Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?

I read fairy tales.

Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?

At this point, almost anything sad could make me cry. I don’t laugh much, but certain things out of nowhere make me laugh. I don’t quite know what causes it.

Fiona: Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?

I want to meet Margaret Atwood to discuss writing.

Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?

I read, research, write, and watch the news. I love breaking news. I want to be the first one to hear news and tell others. I love to work in Photoshop and create covers.

Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?

I love Law and Order, Law and Order SVU, Criminal Minds, MSNBC, and Chicago Fire, and Chicago PD.

Fiona: Favorite foods, colors, music?

I love steak, blue, and Irish music.

Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

I can’t imagine not writing, but I would read and create book covers.

Fiona: You only have 24 hours to live how would you spend that time?

I guess talk to my husband and children.

Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?

My name is enough.
