Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?

I’m Andrea (A.J. Daniels.). I’m 30

Fiona: Where are you from?

I’m originally from South Africa but immigrated to Toronto with my family in 2001 and now I live in BC, Canada.

Fiona: A little about your self (ie,  your education, family life, etc.).

I’m currently part way through my BA of Arts with a major in psychology and minor in Creative Writing. I hope to purse a MA in Forensic psych after graduation. I’m married to a great man who buys me wine and chocolate and lets me burrow myself away for days at a time to write whatever voice is currently occupying space in my headhaha

Fiona: Tell us your latest news.

I was recently part of an anthology with some amazing authors.

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

I started writing poems and short stories as a kid. Writing was and still is a creative outlet for me. Writing poetry allowed me to express and work through my anxiety and depression as a teenager and that continued on into adulthood.

Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

Probably when I published my first book.

Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?

Oh gosh, I’m not sure. I think I just sat down at my computer one night during a graveyard shift and started writing. I honestly never thought that I would ever publish it.

Fiona: How did you come up with the title?

One of my alpha readers actually came up with the title. I knew it was going to be a series and I wanted the names to show that but everything I had jotted down just wasn’t doing it for me. By that time, she had already read 90% of the first book so I asked her for ideas, and she said what about Dark Desire? It just kind of stuck and I ended up naming the second book Dark Betrayal and the third Dark Illusion.

Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?

I’m definitely a pantser. The only thing I know going into a book are the major points that need to happen but other than that I pretty much just wing it and let the characters take over. Sex scenes can definitely be challenging, especially when writing a threesome and having to keep track of arms and legs and other parts haha.

Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

In Dark Desire, the anxiety attack Klara has on her first date with Braxton mirrors some of the ones I’ve experienced myself. She also shares my love of Castle Loma (the castle in Toronto). It’s one of my favourite places to visit in the summer when I’m in the GTA.

Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?

So far I haven’t had to travel since all my books take place in either fictional locations or location I’ve been to.

Fiona: Who designed the covers?

J.M. Walker of Just Write. Creations. She’s amazing and I highly recommend her.

Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Mental health is huge for me and it’s something that I feel really need to be talked about. I think that’s why some of my characters have mental illnesses like anxiety or depression that they struggle with throughout the books.

Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?  Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?

I’m always discovering new to me authors, but I would recommend V. Theia, Lauren Cooper, and Nichole Austin.

Oh man, I can’t pick just one haha. My top one-click authors are Kandi Steiner, C.M. Owens, J.M. Walker, Lucy Lennox, and Sloane Kennedy. They write such strong characters and I’m always wanting more of the story even after the last page.

Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.

My best friend.

Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?

I do, definitely. Hopefully haha

Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

I think I would flesh out the backstories more. I tend to not dive too deep into past backgrounds of my characters even though I’ve done all the research and probably have a notebook filled. Most of it doesn’t make it into the final book.

Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

Writing MM is hard haha!

Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

When I first started writing Dark Illusion Nick Bateman was my muse for Antonio. He’s all about his tailored suits and Nick can definitely pull off a suit.

Fiona: Any advice for other writers?

Don’t let anyone tell you you’re not good enough.

Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

Just thank you for reading my books. It really means a lot.

Fiona: What book are you reading now?

An ARC of J.M. Walker’s next release, Broken Scars.

Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?

I don’t, but I remember reading “To Kill a Mockingbird” in elementary school and loved it.

Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?

I cry at everything, even when I’m laughing, I cry. It’s horrible!

Fiona: Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?

I don’t think there’s any specific one person. I would definitely love to meet some of my one-click authors and my PA, Nicole. I feel like we’d get into a lot of trouble together though haha.

Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?

Aside from reading? Lol. I’m heavy into planners and planner accessories. I have a ton of stickers, markers, and pens. Not sure if that counts as a hobby.

Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?

I don’t have any new TV shows currently on the go, but I did just binge watch the entire first season of Mr. Iglesias on Netflix as well as all four seasons of Lucifer. My go-to shows are usually comedies like, The Big Bang Theory and Friends, or true crime (anything on ID), Criminal Minds, CSI: Miami, Bones.

Fiona: Favorite foods, colors,  music?

Favourite food – Does chocolate count?

Colour – purple and turquoise

Music – I love a wide range of genres. Right now, I’m mostly listening to Country, but my Spotify also has lots of old school rap and r&b, pop, and hard rock. I think I also have a couple instrumental playlists saved.

Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

Probably something in Forensic Psychology like eyewitness testimony or risk assessment which is what I’m currently going to school for.

Fiona: You only have 24 hours to live how would you spend that time?

I’d go pick up my mom and brother in Toronto and take them and my husband on a vacation to Greece which has been on my bucket list for forever.

Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?

I’ve never given it any thought haha. I know I want to be cremated instead of buried though.

Fiona: Do you have a blog or website readers can visit for updates, events and special offers?
