Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?

Hello, my name is Nikita Slater and I’m 38.

Fiona: Where are you from?

I’m currently living in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, but I’ve lived all over Western Canada including Calgary and Victoria.

Fiona: A little about your self (ie,  your education, family life, etc.).

I have my English degree and a counselling certificate. I live with my 13-year old son and my fur-baby, Friday.

Fiona: Tell us your latest news.

I’m about to release my 25th novel, Sanctuary on Fire, the second book in my Sanctuary Series, a dystopian dark romance.

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

I started telling stories the moment I could pick up a crayon and I never stopped. I’ve always had a vivid imagination and writing is a release for me.

Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I’ve always identified as a writer, well before I was even published. Writing has been a basic part of who I am from a young age.

Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?

I told a friend that I loved to write, and he pushed me to finish one of my books and self-publish. At the time I thought it was just a fun hobby, now it’s become such a major part of my life.

Fiona: How did you come up with the title?

I honestly can’t remember. It’s called Prisoner of Fortune, so I probably picked up two themes from the book and used them in the title; a captive and a casino.

Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?

I tend to write very passionately, completely checking out from reality when I fall into the dark hole of my imagination. Sometimes, if I’m in the right mood, I will write an entire book in a few weeks. I get frustrated when I need to slow down and pay careful attention to what I’m writing. However, as I’ve matured, I’ve learned to merge the crazy writing style with something a little more thoughtful.

Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

I take inspiration from people, places, music and events. I love to watch the world around me and tuck little things away for later use. I have a friend with a fantastic name and awesome personality quirks. I used her as a basis for one of my characters. Beyond that, most of my novels come straight from my imagination.

Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?

I love to travel and will use places that I travel to in my books. However, I haven’t yet travelled specifically to a place in order to write about it.

Fiona: Who designed the covers?

Most of my book covers are designed by Drew from http://www.idrewthis.com. He’s a local artist that works in the advertising industry. My Fire & Vice covers were designed by a fellow author.

Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

If I had to pick one message it would be sex positivity, that it’s a good and healthy thing for women to indulge in fantasy. This includes dark romance too, which is the majority of what I write. We all fantasize differently and there is no shame in loving romance, horror, erotica or a combination of all three.

Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?  Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?

I have many authors that I love to read. To name just a few: K. Webster, Addison Cain, DD Prince, Mia Knight, Nikki Belaire, Anna Zaires, N. Heinz. One of my favourite authors is Jasmin Quinn. I think she’s a bit of a hidden gem. Her books are well-written, exciting and extremely satisfying.

Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.

My online family has become everything to me in my publishing journey. From the first person that wrote me a fan message to my reader group, fellow authors, the bloggers that support me, my admin, my PA. So many of these people I’ve never actually met but have developed strong and enduring relationships with.

Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?

Yes, writing is currently my full-time career.

Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

No. I’m usually pretty confident that I’ve written the book that I want to write, or I won’t release it.

Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

I learned that I will not survive a zombie apocalypse.

Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

Jason Momoa. He can play all my leads. In fact, if it comes down to it, I’ll rewrite the characters to look like him.

Fiona: Any advice for other writers?

Connect with your community. The support that you will find with other authors, editors, cover artists, bloggers and readers is invaluable. Writing can be lonely, but if you create friendships in your community you will never be alone when you need to reach out, either to get a question answered or to just vent about a bad day.

Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

Yes. My readers mean the world to me. I love to tell stories and they keep coming back to read them. I will always feel a sense of awe, deep appreciation and gratitude for my readers.

Fiona: What book are you reading now?

I’m reading Sin by Elena M. Reyes.

Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?

I remember the first romance novel I read, it was Savage Thunder by Johanna Lindsey.

Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?

I love to laugh and will laugh at pretty much anything, even if it’s completely inappropriate. I’d like to say something profound about what makes me cry, but honestly, I cry most often when I have PMS.

Fiona: Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?

Jane Austen. She really fuelled my love of reading and showed me that it is entirely possible to create an epic romantic story that also has some social and political subtext.

Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?

Can I say writing? Even though it’s my career, writing is still my favourite thing to do in my spare time. But aside from writing I like to put puzzles together, colour, walk my dog, hang out with my son and go to the gym.

Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?

I don’t watch much TV, but I have watched shows like Buffy, Firefly, Doctor Who, Star Trek and Walking Dead. My favourite movie is the Fifth Element. I’ve probably seen it a dozen times.

Fiona: Favorite foods, colors,  music?

My favourite foods are chocolate, hot wings, tacos and blueberries. I love the colour blue. And my music tastes are hard to describe. I create playlists for all my books and it definitely depends on the mood I’m going for. I listen to Sia, Queen, Beyonce, Dolly Parton, Lorde, Dixie Chicks, Nina Simone, Hozier.

Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

I’m an active member of my community and volunteer with severalnon-profit organizations. If I could no longer write I would most likely find counselling work with one of these organizations.

Fiona: You only have 24 hours to live how would you spend that time?

Trying to find a cure? Or am I about to be hit by a meteorite? I need more information to properly answer this, but I’m pretty sure I’d be spending the time trying to figure out how not to die.

Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?

“Here lies one twisted and super fun human. She will be missed. Especially by her dog.Unless her dog died first.”
