Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.
Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?
A.L. Long, let’s just say I am old enough to know better, and still young enough to try.
Fiona: Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Colorado, but currently live in Minnesota
Fiona: A little about your self (ie, your education, family life, etc.).
There isn’t much to tell. I went to school at the University of Northern Colorado where I earned a Degree in business. From there I got my first job in banking and worked at various banking institutions until I took an early retirement.
Fiona: Tell us your latest news.
I have just recently released my nineteenth book titled Slaved: Last chance Series and I am currently working on the third book of the series which I hope to release in August. I have also been notified that I have won a Book Excellence Award for Saving Hanna.
Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?
After retiring I wanted to do something that I knew I would enjoy, so I decided to write. It has been something that I have always wanted to do, but never found the time to do.
Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?
When I published my first book Next to Never and actually began making money.
Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?
I have always been an avid reader of romance and my mom always said I had a great imagination. She was my inspiration.
Fiona: How did you come up with the title?
My titles usually come after I have written the first chapter of my books. I always try to come up with a title that relates to the story.
Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?
I normally prefer to write in first person and alternated each chapter from the two main characters of the book. I have written in third person as well and enjoy doing that style of writing as well.
Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Everything I write is fictional. There are not any real experiences reflected in any of my books. Have been told that some of my books are unrealistic, but personally I don’t think so. I try to make the plot of my books as realistic as possible. Every book I write requires a lot of research and I want to make sure that everything I write does actually happen.
Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?
No. It’s amazing how much information you can find on the internet. I do have to say, that whenever I do travel, for vacation or for other reasons. I sometimes get inspired to write and use some bits and pieces of my travels in my books.
Fiona: Who designed the covers?
I have a very good designer, whom has been with me for some Time. She also puts together all of trailers.
Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
There is really no message when writing Fiction. A writers only hope is that even for a moment they can be taken to a different world and forget about the world that they are currently in.
Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest? Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?
I have met so many authors over the years and have given advice to new authors. They are all amazing in their own way. I really don’t have any favorite writers, but I do enjoy reading books by Sylvia Day, Meredith Wild and J. Kenner to name a few
Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.
There are so many people that have shown me so much support. Mostly, I would have to say is my street team and my PA. Everyday they are promoting my work and giving me ‘hurrahs’ on how much they have enjoyed reading my books.
Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?
Yes, Over the past five years, I have worked very hard to get my name out there. During that time, I have won numerous awards, which by the way is the greatest inspiration to continue writing.
Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
No. I will never have any regrets. Even if there is a book, I have written that hasn’t done well, it is a learning experience for me to do better.
Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?
I have learned that every book I write, my writing gets better. I have really grown over the past five years.
Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?
I love Chris Price. He would definitely be the hero and Jessica Alba would be the heroine.
Fiona: Any advice for other writers?
Never give up. And take the good reviews with the bad. Think of the bad reviews as a way to make you better.
