Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name.

Lark Brennan

Fiona: Where are you from?

I live in Texas.

Fiona: A little about yourself (ie,  your education, family life, etc.).

I’m married to a brilliant architect and have two darling, but sometimes naughty rescue dogs named Buffy and Jody. They make regular appearances on my Facebook and Instagram accounts. It’s probably not surprising that my undergraduate degree is in English/Literature or that I worked in marketing and advertising for many years. Whenever we get the chance, my husband and I travel abroad which is how we’ve met some of our dearest friends.

Fiona: Tell us your latest news.

The last two books of the Durand Chronicles will be released back to back in late summer or early fall. Book 4-Desperately Yours-ends in a cliff hanger so it was important to release the last book-Fatally Yours- as soon as possible.

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

My father was a school principal and allowed me to spend my summers in the school library reading. By the time I was about 10 I knew I wanted to write stories like the ones what took me to new places and introduced me to intriguing characters.

Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

Always, but when I signed with my agent was the first time being a professional writer felt real.

Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?

The first book that sold, Dangerously Yours, was actually the third book I wrote. It was inspired by my life in the Virgin Islands where I had a dive boat and spent much of my time underwater. The main character is a marine biologist who can communicate telepathically with the whales and dolphins she studies. And she flies a seaplane. She was a fun character to write.

Fiona: How did you come up with the title?

My friend came up with it after reading the tag line: Two egos, two agendas, two steamy nights on a tropical island.

Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?

Although my books get shelved as paranormal romance because the main characters have psychic abilities, they have strong elements of suspense and adventure. My editor was a thriller editor who disliked a lot of the standard romance conventions and taught me how to write a fast-paced pager-turner. There’s still a romance in each book, but there’s also a strong plot.

Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

My books aren’t autobiographical at all.Occasionally a character will have a trait or experience taken from real life, but only rarely.

Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?

My books take place in some of my favourite places around the world—British Virgin Islands, Paris, Montana, New Orleans, South of France and Scotland. Since I already know these locations, I don’t usually travel specifically to research a book but sometimes visit a setting during the writing process. These days a lot of research can be done online if needed.

Fiona: Who designed the covers?

My publisher’s art department. I didn’t have much input on the first two, but was very involved on the third which has a more suspenseful tone.

Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?  Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?

There are so many new authors whose books I enjoy! And I have too many favourites to pick just one. Susan Elizabeth Phillips is an author I auto-buy because her books are witty, original and have characters I always fall in love with. When things aren’t going well, reading her books brighten my day.

Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.

My long-time critique partner, Sarah Andre, has been there through all the ups and downs. Our careers have developed at the same pace so we share a lot of the same experiences. She’s a wonderful friend.

Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?

Yes. A tough one, but rewarding.

Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

No.

Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

Every book has its own lessons. For the latest I had to learn about sex-trafficking and international law enforcement. For the book before, I researched voodoo. And I’m always improving my craft to write the best book I can write.

Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

For the latest—Chris Hemsworth. The hero is tall, blonde, and dangerous.

Fiona: Any advice for other writers?

Learn your craft. Put your butt in the chair and write. Then re-write. Then re-write again and again until it’s good.

Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

Thank you for all your support. I love to hear from you!

Fiona: What book are you reading now?

Stone Cold Heart by Laura Griffin. Her suspense novels are fabulous and brilliantly researched.

Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?

LOL. No.

Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?

My dogs make me laugh every day. They do the funniest things.

Fiona: Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?

I’ve always admired Katherine Hepburn (because saying Chris Hemsworth would be too shallow). She had such a quirky public persona, but I think she was a very strong woman for her era.

Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?

My husband and I love to travel! One day when he retires, we’d love to take a yearlong trip around the world.

Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?

Action and intrigue are my favorites–Game of Thrones, Avengers, Fast and Furious. For a change, the English mystery series are always entertaining.

Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

Sit on a beach and watch the sun rise and set. Maybe buy a sailboat and cruise the Caribbean.

Fiona: You only have 24 hours to live how would you spend that time?

I have no idea.

Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?

Nothing. I plan to have my ashes dumped at sea.

Fiona: Do you have a blog or website readers can visit for updates, events and special offers?

 Sure!
