Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name.

Michelle M. Pillow

Fiona: Where are you from?

Midwest

Fiona: A little about yourself (ie, your education, family life, etc.).

I have a BGS in History and Business, an English minor, and a Certificate in Globalization and Culture Change (Cultural Anthropology).

I’m a NY Times & USA TODAY bestselling romance and cozy mystery author. My first books were historical set romances. I liked the challenge of building a world within specific parameters and creating characters that had to conform to the era in which they lived.

After my first book, a Regency ghost story, published in 2004, the editors contacted me needing authors for their sci-fi line. That first sci-fi, Dragon Lords, a futuristic dragon-shifter series, turned into the Quirlixen World collection with 34 books within seven series installments and it’s still growing. I’ve since written in multiple genres. I’m fortunate to have readers who follow me where my muse leads.

I’ve learned to stay open to new opportunities and have been offered some exciting experiences that way.

Fiona: Tell us your latest news.

I just released the start to a new cozy mystery series.

Better Haunts and Garden Gnomes

(Un)Lucky Valley Book 1

Cozy Mystery Paranormal Romantic Comedy

June 26, 2018

Welcome to Lucky Valley where nothing is quite what it seems.

Lily Goode wasn’t aware she had an inheritance waiting for her in the form of a huge Victorian house in Lucky Valley, Colorado. Life might finally be coming together for her. That is if you don’t count the endless home repairs, dealing with eccentric Aunt Polly who claims they’re both witches, and Nolan Dawson the handsome home inspector who seems to have it out for her, then, sure, life is grand. Oh, and not to mention the strange hallucinations and garden gnomes who are far more than lawn ornaments.

If mysterious accidents don’t do her in, then the rebellious gnomes just might. With the help of Aunt Polly, it’s up to Lily to discover who’s sabotaging her new home and trying to drive the Goodes out of Lucky Valley once and for all.

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

I have always loved telling stories with words and pictures. I used to do so as a photographer, and thought that was going to be my future, but writing took off and I’ve never looked back. Now photography has taken a backseat to the words.

Fiona: What inspired you to write Better Haunts and Garden Gnomes?

My first cozy mystery was in The Happily Everlasting Series project with Mandy M. Roth, Kirsten Painter, and Jana DeLeon. We all came up with the shared world, and we each wrote different books within the town. In my first book, Fooled Around and Spelled in Love, Aunt Polly quickly became a fan favorite. She started as the loveable, quirky aunt to Fooled Around and Spelled in Love’s heroine. My new series is called (Un)Lucky Valley where I bring Polly with me to a new town.

So why did I write Better Haunts and Garden Gnomes? For Aunt Polly. Readers love her. I love her. She’s too much fun to stop.

Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?

Travel is great for research. Often, that’s when the best ideas strike—when you’re not looking for them. Experiencing something makes you better versed in writing about it—not that I can take off into spaceships, but I can tour a ghost town like the one in my newest cozy mystery, or I can interview an expert in paranormal investigations about their techniques, or climb Mayan Temples in Belize, or visit museums.

My husband and I love to travel and meet people. You’re bound to learn something every time you step out into the world.

Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?  Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?

I love Mandy M. Roth’s Immortal Ops series. I read the first one 15 years ago when we both were publishing our first books. I love getting sneak peeks from her Ops worlds, including the spin off series. It’s like a behind the scenes look each time she writes one.

There are so many talented people in my genres, it’s hard to write a list that does them all justice—Gena Showalter, Kristen Painter, Jill Monroe, Leigh Duncan, Yasmine Galenorn… I tend to read authors who I’ve found to be awesome people.

Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.

Mandy M. Roth and I have been besties almost from the start of our careers. Her support and friendship is invaluable.

Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?

Most definitely.

Fiona: Any advice for other writers?

There is no magic pill, so you just have to do the research and the work. Oh, and I find coffee helps. Lots and lots of coffee.

Write the best book you can. No book, no reason to go through the trouble of everything else. The book is the fun part! I know so many people who want to be authors, but they haven’t written a chapter of anything.

Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

I heart you and thank you.

Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?

Grey’s Anatomy makes me cry. Everyone kept recommending it so I recently binge watched it and I think I cried during every episode. My husband probably thought something was seriously wrong with me. LOL

I love to laugh. My husband and I joke around all the time. Usually it’s the silliest stuff.

Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

I’d fight zombies because I’m assuming it’s the apocalypse if I can’t write.

Fiona: You only have 24 hours to live how would you spend that time?

With family

Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?

A riddle.

Fiona: Do you have a blog or website readers can visit for updates, events and special offers?

I love hearing from my readers. They can find me online:
