Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?

I’m Nicole Highland, and I’m 27 years old.

Fiona: Where are you from?

I’m from Fort Wayne, Indiana in the United States.

Fiona: A little about your self (ie,  your education, family life, etc.).

I have an Associate’s degree in graphic design, and I work full time as a graphic designer, and now I’m an author!

Fiona: Tell us your latest news.

My latest news: I have another novella coming out in November!

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

I began writing around 13 or 14 years old. I mostly wrote poetry and fanfiction. I don’t write fanfiction anymore, but I do still write poetry.

Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I don’t think I really considered myself a writer until I finished Sweetest Release.

Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?

I got the inspiration to write Sweetest Release from a friend of mine who met his first love in high school, but he ultimately did not end up with her. It hit him pretty hard emotionally, and even to this day, she has a special place in his heart. Though his situation was much different from character Devin’s, it gave me the idea to write a story about losing a first love, and how devastating that it can be.

Fiona: How did you come up with the title?

As I was writing the prologue, it just popped into my head. Natalie and Devin’s reuniting was the release they both needed and wanted for so long, so ‘Sweetest Release’ just made sense!

Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?

I like to write in first person. I guess you could say that’s my ‘style’ in a way. I like to immerse myself in the world of my main character, and become one with their thoughts and emotions.

Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

There are definitely some parts of me within Natalie’s character in particular, and there are some influences from my life sprinkled throughout the story.

Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?

No. In fact I really don’t get a lot of time to travel these days!

Fiona: Who designed the covers?

I did, since I am a graphic designer.

Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I would say that my message to my readers would be that life is unexpected, and if love is meant to be, it will happen. True love doesn’t have an expiration date. It spans beyond time distance.

Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?  Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?

It’s hard to narrow it down to a single author, but some of my favorite authors are Debbie Macomber, Nicholas Sparks, and Penelope Ward.

Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.

I don’t know if I could narrow this down to a single person, but I’m a member of several romance writing-related Facebook groups, and the support from these communities has been great!

Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?

I would love for that to happen, but we will see!

Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

I would absolutely include more detail in the book about Devin and his backstory. Because I didn’t elaborate as much as I could have, I decided to write a second novella dedicated to telling his story.

Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

I learned so much during this process, that it would be next to impossible to make a list of everything I’ve learned!

Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

For Devin, I would definitely pick Sam Witwer. And for Natalie, I think I would go with Julianne Hough!

Fiona: Any advice for other writers?

Keep writing, and never give up!

Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

I would love to thank them all for their support! It means the world to me.

Fiona: What book are you reading now?

Actually, I’m in between books right now, but I just finished Cold Hard Cash by Frankie Love.

Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?

I can’t really remember, but as a kid, I loved reading Dr. Seuss books!

Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?

I love genuinely funny people who don’t even try to be funny. To me, that’s the best type of humor.

Fiona: Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?

If I could meet anyone from the past, I would love to meet Carole Lombard. She was a classy woman, with a quick wit, and I love it. I think her and I would get along great!

Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?

When I’m not writing, I’m doing freelance graphic design work, or snapping photos. I enjoy being creative. I also enjoy spending time with friends and family.

Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?

I don’t watch cable TV, but I do enjoy Stranger Things and Riverdale on Netflix.

Fiona: Favorite foods, colors,  music?

My favorite food: barbeque chicken. My favorite color: pink. My favorite music: anything I can dance to!

Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

Since I already work full time as a graphic designer, I would just keep working full time.

Fiona: You only have 24 hours to live how would you spend that time?

I would spend that time with my family.

Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?

Maybe something like, ‘She was a touch of glitter that brought a sparkle to the world.’ Haha. I’m not sure!

Fiona: Do you have a blog or website readers can visit for updates, events and special offers?
