Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?

I’m Deborah Camp and I’m old enough to know better.

Fiona: Where are you from?

Tulsa, OK

Fiona: A little about your self (ie,  your education, family life, etc.).

I have a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tulsa. I was a newspaper reporter for several years before I became a fulltime fiction writer. I have a long-time companion. He lives in NYC, so we are back and forth between NYC and Tulsa. I have three dogs (Mr. Christian Grey, Mr. Darcy, and Slim).

Fiona: Tell us your latest news.

Through Her Touch, #5 in my 6-book Mind’s Eye series was released July 25. The final book, Through Her Heart, will be published this fall.

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

I’ve always wanted to write, even before I could write, I loved to tell stories or have them read to me.

Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

Oh, I suppose in high school when I wrote for the school newspaper.

Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?

I love romances and read them all the time, so I decided to write one.

Fiona: How did you come up with the title?

The title of my first book? It wasn’t the one I had. It was changed by the publisher. I don’t actually recall what I’d titled the book. It was back in the late 1970s.

Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?

I’m sure I do have a writing style, but I don’t know what it is because I don’t pay attention to that sort of thing. Any style of writing is challenging because you’re always learning and trying to get better with each book.

Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

If you’re referring to my latest book – Through Her Touch – it’s a work of fiction, I’ve woven things through it that I’ve experienced – I’ve been to Eureka Springs and have stayed in the places I mention in the book and I’ve had a ghostly experience or two while I was there – and I have made up things in it, too. So, it’s a combination of my life experiences, what I’ve observed in others, and pure fabrication.

Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?

I don’t have to travel, but I do sometimes. Eureka Springs is close to where I live, so I did go there a time or two to refresh my memory of it and to stay in the tree house lodge and the Belladonna Inn. I also do “armchair” or “computer” traveling.

Fiona: Who designed the covers?

Patricia Schmitt designed the cover. She is very talented.

Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I suppose in the Mind’s Eye books it would be to not judge people before you get to know them. Don’t jump to conclusions about new acquaintances and don’t judge too harshly until you know what someone has been through or is battling. Life is tough and many of us are just coping, day to day. The two main characters in the Mind’s Eye series – Levi Wolfe and Trudy Tucker – are talented psychics, but they are flawed individuals dealing with their own inner roadblocks.

Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?  Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?

I have quite a few authors I like. Right now I’m loving Roni Loren’s books. I like her sexy romances and her interesting characters and backstories. I also love Abigail Barnette’s (The Boss) books. The Boss, The Girlfriend, etc. Her books are very sexy and realistic to me. They also deal with some sticky subjects. And C.D. Reiss is a talented writer who doesn’t pull any punches.

Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.

I had a mentor named Peggy Fielding who encouraged my writing and was a wonderful friend. The character of Quintara in my Mind’s Eye series is based on Peggy.

Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?

Writing is my career and has been my only career since I was in college.

Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

I learn from every book.

Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

Someone as lovely as Trudy and someone as handsome as Levi.

Fiona: Any advice for other writers?

Just keep on plugging away at it.

Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

Thanks for hanging in there with me!

Fiona: What book are you reading now?

I’m reading a Roni Loren book. The One You Can’t Forget

Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?

I think it was The Pokey Little Puppy.

Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?

Fiona: Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?

Truman Capote. I think he was a great writer and a fascinating person.

Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?

I volunteer with an animal rescue group. I foster dogs until we can find great homes for them.

Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?

Romance, mystery, some sci-fi.

Fiona: Favorite foods, colors,  music?

Orange is my favoritecolor. I like a lot of different kindsmusic, and I like food way, way too much!

Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

I’d probably be a teacher.

Fiona: You only have 24 hours to live how would you spend that time?

Worry about it, cry, hug my dogs, make love to my man.

Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?

She loved to laugh.
