Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?

My name is Jaka Tomc. I’m 37 years old.

Fiona: Where are you from?

I live in Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia.

Fiona: A little about your self (ie,  your education, family life, etc.).

I have a college degree in HRM. I live with my girlfriend, Neja. I own a small independent publishing house Manični poet (Manic Poet). When I don’t write or publish books I work in accounting.

Fiona: Tell us your latest news.

I just published my first book on Amazon. 720 Heartbeats is actually a translation of my sixth book. It’s a book about a detective who finds a mysterious diary on his computer and it changes his life. I don’t want to go into too much detail and spoil the book for you.

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

I started writing at the age of five. There was just nothing better to do at that point in my life.

Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

In 2008 when I started writing my first novel. I even quit my job to become a full time writer. I didn’t realize the characteristics of the Slovene market then and I thought I would easily sell thousands of copies. I didn’t and I had to find another job.

Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?

I have no idea. I sat in the office and started typing. Words became sentences, sentences became a chapter, and before I knew it, I had about a third of my first novel. My bosses found out what I was doing so they gave me a choice. I could do what I was paid to do, or I could quit my job and write books. I chose to be a writer.

Fiona: How did you come up with the title?

Titles are never easy. I always give my book a working title and sometimes it works when the book is finished so I stick with it. But titles are very important so you have to choose something that will attract the potential reader.

Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?

I usually build the story as I go. Sometimes I finish the chapter and I don’t know what will happen in the next one. I find that pretty challenging but it works for me. Considering the feedback I get from the readers, it works for them too.

Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

In my books there are always some events that happened to me, and some characters are based on people that I know. I could write a story that would be completely made up, but real-life experiences are like a fuel to the author. If you combine experiences with imagination, something wonderful happens.

Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?

No. In my mind I can travel all around the world if I have to.

Fiona: Who designed the covers?

Different people. The cover of 720 Heartbeats was designed by MaticLipar.

Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Yes there is. Life is unpredictable. Whatever you do, life always has the upper hand.

Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?  Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?

Sylvain Neuvel and J.D. Barker. My favorite author is Arthur C. Clarke. He wrote books that I just can’t put down. His books carry an important messages for mankind.

Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.

When I started writing there were none, including my family. Everybody thought I was going crazy.

Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?

Yes I do.

Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

No. Of course if I wrote any of my existing books today, they wouldn’t be the same. I evolved as a writer. I evolved as a human being. My books are what they are. It’s best to not think about what you could change and put your energy into new stories.

Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

Of course. I learned that life is a Russian roulette. I learned that you get second chances but it’s your decision if you make anything out of them. I learned that you don’t have to panic when you get to crossroads.

Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

Chris Pratt.

Fiona: Any advice for other writers?

You will never satisfy everyone. There are people who love your work, and there are people who hate it. It’s normal. Believe in yourself and let yourself grow as a writer. Listen to what other people have to say but learn to filter the information. Write. Write as much as you can.

Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

I exist as a writer because of you. Thank you.

Fiona: What book are you reading now?

On writing by Stephen King.

Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?

Unfortunately I don’t. But I learned to read by reading obituaries.

Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?

A good book. A movie. Human beings.

Fiona: Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?

I’d love to meet Stephen King. I think he’s fun to hang around with.

Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?

Not at the moment.

Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?

Westworld, Black Mirror, Handmaid’s Tale, Stranger Things, Dark. There are too many films to pick a few, but in general I love the ones that relax me or the ones that make me think.

Fiona: Favorite foods, colors,  music?

I like pasta, pizza or a good burger. My favorite color used to be blue, now it’s yellow. I like rock music and rap.

Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

I would read and grow flowers.

Fiona: You only have 24 hours to live how would you spend that time?

I would write a short story. The remaining hours I would spend with the people I love.

Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?

He was what he was.

Fiona: Do you have a blog or website readers can visit for updates, events and special offers?

I do. It’s https://jakatomc.com
