Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.

Hi Fiona. Thanks you so much for inviting me for an interview!

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name.

My name is Tamara Ferguson.

Fiona: Where are you from?

I was born and grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, IL.

Fiona: A little about your self (ie,  your education, family life, etc.).

Our family moved to central Illinois when I was in high school and I attended Illinois State University where I got my degree in Agribusiness/Horticulture. I worked 3 jobs and was very active in extracurricular department and university activities, was the vice president of my graduating class (fund raising) and won the ISU Collegiate Achievement Award from the College of Applied Science & Technology. Eventually, after working as a florist, wholesale and retail, I ended up as a successful horticulturist. I have two sons—one is married with his master’s in athletic training and my other son is severely autistic and diabetic, so I am currently his full-time caregiver.

Fiona: Tell us your latest news.

I have had 6 new releases this year and at least that many more coming out before December.

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

I began writing when my autistic son’s vocational program fell through after he graduated from school. I had planned to expand my horticultural business which I no longer would be able to do. IL ranks last in the nation in their ability to support and care for the aged and disabled.

Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I think when I won my first award. But I still wasn’t reassured until I actually began selling a lot of books!

Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?

It can be very difficult being a full-time caregiver for someone who is totally dependent on you. Writing was (and is) my escape.

Fiona: How did you come up with the title?

Tales of the Dragonfly – was a new beginning. “It is said that the dragonfly is a symbol of renewal after a time of great hardship.”

Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?

I am very direct and to the point. I’ve been told that my books are easy to read. One of the genres I write is wounded warrior romance, which does require a lot of research. What’s challenging is putting the facts into words so that the story is unique and entertaining.

Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

There’s a little of me in every character and story I write (good and bad!)

Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?

One of my jobs back in college was as a research assistant, so I’m good at discovering facts. But I also draw on the past, so my stories are set in a place called Crystal Rock, which is similar to the town where I vacationed with my family as a kid. I can’t really travel now because of my son.

Fiona: Who designed the covers?

I have a fabulous cover designer based in Spain. Adriana Hanganu is a former graphic designer. Adipixdesign.com

Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

All my stories are about HOPE – finding love despite hardships. I always write happily ever after, since it doesn’t usually work out that way in real life.

Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?  Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?

I like some of the more famous romance & suspense writers – Nora Roberts, Linda Howard, Mary Balogh – because their stories are unique. There are a lot of talented romance writers with Avon and Harlequin, but truthfully? A lot of the stories seem similar, so they don’t hold my interest these days, although they did when I was younger.

Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.

Since I didn’t even tell my family about my writing until I finally had to because of the sales and the awards, I guess twitter was the best entity because it got my name out there.

Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?

It already is!! I have to write almost every day to keep up with my deadlines.

Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

I write for a lot of boxsets – the last story I wrote in 4 days – 20,000 words – hah so when I go back to get it ready for independent release, I will probably beef up the final few chapters even though I was happy when I listened to it.

Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

I learned that I can still write well, even with a deadline!

Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

Hmm. I can’t really think of any famous people who would fit. But that’s good I suppose, because it makes my heroes and heroines unique.

Fiona: Any advice for other writers?

Don’t quit! The success I’ve had just suddenly happened. Don’t close your mind to advice from your peers, because no matter how happy I am with something I write, I know it can always be better.

Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

Being a writer doesn’t just stop at writing, you need to be prepared to promote yourself as well, otherwise your book will just sit there.

Fiona: What book are you reading now?

I have over 60 on my tbr list – but I’m not sure when I’ll have time! A lot of books I’ve promised to review – which I try not to do anymore. But when I just want to read, I usually pick something from one of the favorite writers I’ve listed above.

Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?

Probably The Night Before Christmas, but relevant books? Jane Eyre I read on my own when I was only like 10 years old and I loved it. My next favorite would have been Alfred Hitchcock Presents (which I still have). I got it as a gift when I was twelve and read it over and over.

Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?

I suppose my autistic son – he makes me laugh yet thinking about his future sometimes makes me cry.

Fiona: Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?

Not so much one person, but I would love to have the ability to look back and view history from each branch of my family tree.

Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?

I used to – cooking, flower arranging – I did wedding flowers and lawn maintenance as a side business actually, but there’s not time for that anymore. Home improvement? I’ve done it all – tiling electrical, flooring, plumbing – I even added a room. Now I’m too tired from all the work related to writing and promoting!!

Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?

NCIS, Criminal Minds, The Blacklist – Drama. I’ve always loved old movies, even before TCM was around.

Fiona: Favorite foods, colors,  music?

Ice cream, blue green, any music but mellow rock is my favorite.

Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

Be VERY depressed – hah!

Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?

Y ASK Y is my motto 😊

Fiona: Do you have a blog or website readers can visit for updates, events and special offers?

I am at http://www.Tammysdragonfly.com. But there is also the Authors’ Billboard where we host monthly contests.
