Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.
Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?
Richard M. Griffith, age 50.
Fiona: Where are you from?
Originally from just outside of Chicago Ill. Now live in Anchorage Alaska. I have lived in Elizabeth City North Carolina, Kodiak Alaska, and San Diego.
Fiona: A little about your self (ie, your education, family life, etc.).
Served 24 years in the Military. 3 in the Army and 21 in the US Coast Guard. While in the military I went to college, mostly online, and finished both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree.
Fiona: Tell us your latest news.
Now I still work for the Coast Guard, but as a retired civilian employee. Currently working on LEVI GARRET/SPACE DETECTIVE, #6. Wings for Clipping.
Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?
Like most people I had talked about having a book rattling around in my head for years. Then a friend challenged me to NANOWRIMO and that got it going. After I finished that book I had the idea for a sequel, then some others, then some stand-alone books and now I’m hooked.
Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?
When I realized that the only thing I hated more than writing was not writing.
Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?
I remember watching the movie Excalibur and Arthur saying that when the sword was needed it would rise again. So I asked myself the question, What if it arose today? And chose a woman champion? The result was LADY EXCALIBUR/BEGINNINGS
Fiona: How did you come up with the title?
It was originally going to be just Lady Excalibur, but halfway through I came up with ideas for sequels. Hence the addition of Beginnings to the title.
Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?
I don’t believe I have any style at all. Fashion or writing. But I dislike writing in first person, unfortunately it is the best way to tell detective stories.
Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Absolutely none. I write adventures I have always wanted to read or see. There is no truth in them.
Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?
I’ve travelled a lot, but google maps and research are more important than travel.
Fiona: Who designed the covers?
I have a brilliant cover artist named Julia Avatar, who is on Deviantart.com as 4steex. Other covers I have done myself.
Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Just try to be a good person. That seems to be my constant theme.
Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest? Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?
My favorite author is David Weber. Although I can not bring myself to write to his level of detail. He is amazing.
Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.
My friend Nate Hall, a local friend who got me into NANOWRIMO.
Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?
No, I see selling books as a career. Writing them doesn’t pay squat.
Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
Oh yes. Many things. I guess that is what motivates me to the next book. The old “Let’s try it this way.”
Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?
I learn from all my books. The research alone is an education.
Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?
Jessica Alba to play Lady Excalibur.Stacy Keech(Circa 1980s) to play Levi Garret/Space detective.Bruce Campbell to play JANITOR 51.
Fiona: Any advice for other writers?
Run, Hide, don’t do it. Once you do it you can’t stop!!!!
Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?
Buy more books!!! To be specific, Buy More of MY books!!!!
Fiona: What book are you reading now?
Origin, by Dan Brown.
Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?
The Green Machine.
Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?
Pet movies make me cry. I hate that.
Fiona: Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?
I’m unsure. I suppose I would like to meet Jesus. I would love to have the story of his life from his own lips.
Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?
I hike, fish, carve ducks, and woodwork.
Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?
The Last Kingdom has been my recent guilty pleasure. I also enjoyed Altered Carbon very much.
Fiona: Favorite foods, colors, music? Food:
Chicago Pizza. Little place called Joe’s Italian Villa. Best food there is. Music depends on my mood. I’m everywhere from AC/DC to Antonio Vivaldi.
Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?
Fiona: You only have 24 hours to live how would you spend that time?
Family, friends and prayer. I’d also eat a lot of sweets.
Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?
