Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.
Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?
M K Scott is the combined name of husband and wife team, Scott and Morgan. Let’s say we’re at a comfortable age where are children are grown.
Fiona: Where are you from?
Currently, we live in a small picturesque city in Indiana.
Fiona: A little about your self (ie, your education, family life, etc.).
Morgan-I grew up in a small town and my father was a farmer and mother, a nurse. My goal was to be a forest ranger, but ended up being a special needs teacher for twenty plus years.
Scott- I grew up in Michigan where my father was an Engineer for Kelloggs. I went on to pursue a career in computer engineering.Between the two of us, we have five adult children, one spoiled dog, and thirty-four completed novels.
Fiona: Tell us your latest news.
The eighth book in The Painted Lady Inn Mysteries series, The Skeleton Wore Diamonds is slated come out early February. The third book in the The Talking Dog Detective Agency, Bark Twice for Danger should be out near the end of March 2018.
Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?
Morgan- I started writing alternative ending to stories in first grade since the ones we had were boring. My teacher didn’t appreciate the chase scenes, cowboys or runaway trains. Apparently, I showed a preference for suspense at an early age.
Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?
I probably wrote my first book a hundred times and it still has never been published. Writing is as natural as breathing to me. It is almost impossible not to write. When most girls wrote a sentence or two in their diaries about their day, I wrote chapters and my life was dull, but still I felt a need to record everything.
Fiona: How did you come up with the title?
On The Skeleton Wore Diamonds (the 8th book in the Painted Lady Inn Mysteries Series), there is both a skeleton and diamonds. When coming up with a title I also consider what my talented cover artist, Anya Kelleye can work with, too.
Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?
To make the books suspenseful in contemporary times, help cannot be a phone call away.Inadvertently, through my own experiences, I’ve found tons of way to ramp up the tension such as being lost in a foreign country, losing your phone, having no one answer when you do call, etc. The list is surprisingly endless.
Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Scott: (Laughs) There is a great deal of family in the main characters.
Morgan:I try to experience the events with the exception of the murder. The book, Caribbean Calamity was based on a cruise I took with my sister. People often tell me they feel like they were on a cruise while reading it.
Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?
We actually travel a great deal for work and pleasure. I’m always taking notes and deciding how to work the details of our travels into a novel. I usually like to do the traveling before the writing process.
Fiona: Who designed the covers?
Anya Kellye does The Painted Lady Inn Mysteries series.
Dawne Dominque does The Talking Dog Detective Agency covers.
Fiona:Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?
Jayne Ann Krentz who also writes as Amanda Quick and Jayne Castle is a fav because of her unique characters, plot lines and dialogue. I’ll reread her books just for the dialogue.
I also like Mary Higgins Clark because she could be funny and suspenseful in the same book.
Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?
I did learn a great deal about the diamond business including the theft side. Since the book revolves around a Gen Con, I went to Star Trek Con, Star Trek Cruise, and Comic Con, which allowed me to learn more about how the conferences work. (I also wanted to go, too.)
Fiona: What book are you reading now?
Me and My Shadows by Jeffrey Poe
Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?
I love to garden, which is surprising that none of my characters do. I’m also a fan of cooking and traveling.
Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?
Morgan: I’ve been binge watching Bluebloods. We watch The Middle and Bob’s Burgers together.
Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?
Garden. My goal is to have a meditation garden for public use and a retreat center. I think I would still get in some writing.
Fiona: Do you have a blog or website readers can visit for updates, events and special offers?
