Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?

My name is Pamela Sommers and I am 47

Fiona: Where are you from?

I am from London, England

Fiona: A little about your self (ie,  your education, family life, etc.).

I am a down to earth, approachable and passionate person with a great sense of humour. I live with my fiancé and son in a quiet suburb.

Fiona: Tell us your latest news.

I have recently written and published my debut self-help book called ‘Life Lessons from a 40 something…’ and am currently writing my second book.

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

When I was 17, my cousin suggested that I should write a book about my life because it was very eventful and I had a great sense of humour. I didn’t think anything more of it until my early 40’s when I decided I would love to leave a legacy, especially for my son – something to remember me by.

I wasn’t quite sure what to write about, but then I remembered what my cousin had said and then thought of ways I could help people along the way, based on my life.

Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I have written songs from the age of 8 and was a singer/songwriter in my earlier days. I started my first business when I was in my early 40’s and found myself spending most of the time writing in one form or another. Whether it was for magazines, copywriting or blogs, so I guess you could say that is when I started writing professionally.

Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?

I was astonished at the number of young people there are with low self-esteem and self-worthand I wanted to do something about it. Having been through this when I was younger, I thought drawing from my own experience was a good place to start and so I decided to base my first book about it.

Fiona: How did you come up with the title?

I knew my book was about life lessons and as it was based on my personal life experience and given my age, ‘Life Lessons from a 40 something…’ seemed apt.

Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?

I like to write in a friendly, conversational style and like to feel as if I am talking to a best friend when I write. I find it more approachable that way.

Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

My entire book is based on my personal life experiences. I think a good way of learning lessons is by beginning with your own, and an even better way is to learn from the experiences of others.

Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?

I mentally travel back in time. Physical travel is not part of my process, although this may change if I need to undertake research for my future books.

Fiona: Who designed the covers?

The cover for my first book was designed by Damonza.

Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I would like my readers to realise that they can be all that they set out to be and more. The world is full of possibilities.

Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?  Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?

Right now, I enjoy reading novels by Debbie Carbin. She is a fiction writer of the Chick-Lit genre, which contrasts to what I write. I like the way it is light-hearted, humorous and easy to relate to.

Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.

Rocky Callen – her passion for writing and to share your message really encouraged me to keep going and helped me believe that I could do it.

Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?

Yes, at first I thought it would be a one off, but now I know that I have helped readersand I have lots of ideas for books; I definitely see writing as a career.

Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

I would spend less time in worrying about the details such as publishing dates etc. and just get it out there, as they say, ‘The best time is always now,’

Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

Yes, I learnt the importance of just writing and getting it down first before doing any editing at all.

Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

I would like Isla Fisher (lead actress from ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’) to play the lead

Fiona: Any advice for other writers?

Keep going and trust in your own ability. You can do it.

Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams, ‘the world is your oyster.’

Fiona: What book are you reading now?

I have just started reading ‘A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)’ by George R.R. Martin

Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?

I remember reading the ‘Dick and Dora’ books at primary school and I was a great fan of the ‘Famous Five’ series by Enid Blyton.

Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?

A good romantic comedy

Fiona: Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge because I love her sense of style and integrity.

Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?

I like to read, dance and sing.

Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?

I love watchingromantic comedies and enjoy watching the Australian soap opera, ‘Home and Away.’

Fiona: Favorite foods, colors,  music?

My favourite food is steak (medium-well).

My favourite colour is red and I love listening to eighties pop music and soft rock. I also enjoy classical music on a Sunday morning.

Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

I would focus on my award-winning business called SommerSparkle providing jewellery & accessories for special occasions, so I would still be doing something creative.

Fiona: Do you have a blog or website readers can visit for updates, events and special offers?

Yes, my website is https://pamelasommers.com
