Name  – Maria Macdonald

Age – 36

Where are you from

I’m originally from London but moved to Wiltshire with my husband when I was 24. We have two beautiful daughters. I work full time and try to fit writing and reading in whenever I can, sometimes it can be challenging!

Fiona: Tell us your latest news?

I’ve just started a new YA / NA series – The Deliverance Series. The books will all be interconnecting standalones. The first book – Dazed – is in the editing process right now, due to be released April 28th.

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

I’ve always written. When I was a teenager I mostly wrote poems and still have a notebook full of them.

Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I feel like whether you publish or not, if you write, you’re a writer. Therefore I probably thought I was a writer when I was in primary school.

Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?

I’m not sure there was anything specific that caused me to write and then publish my first book. I draw inspiration from music and my own feelings. However, as crazy as this may sound I allow the characters to tell me their story and I just feel like I’m a vessel to share their tales ß see I told you I’d sound crazy 😉

Although I’m not a fan of my first published story (To me now it feels very immature) I won’t pull it from distribution because people still read and love that book and if you continue reading my work, you’ll end up seeing a progression of my writing throughout all the books.

Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style?

I always listen to music. Usually I create soundtracks prior to starting the story. Previously I have never plotted my storyline. I tend to write by the seat of my pants. I may change this strategy with some future books, especially for the next book in my PNR series.

Fiona: How did you come up with the title?

Each title is hard to determine and often takes me a while, sometimes I’m half way or more through writing a book before I have a title and often if I have decided on a title, I’ll change it toward the end of the book.

Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Yes. Always.

Whether the reader takes that message away or not is a different matter. I don’t write for them to take ‘my’ message away, I write because I can’t not write and as long as they enjoy the book then I’ve done okay. If they take away my underlying message or if they find their own realization then that’s amazing.

Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

My books aren’t based on anyone in real life, however there are some scenarios in some of my books that have actually happened in real life.

Fiona: What books have most influenced your life most? A mentor?

There have been many books over the years that have provided inspiration to want to write. The love of reading can cause us (it certainly did with me) to want to create our own fictional worlds. I remember reading George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dhal when I was a child as well as Jill’s Riding Club by Ruby Ferguson and they both made me feel different things. Again, when I was in my 20’s I started to read Sophie Kinsella and Jane Green and then in my 30’s it was EL James. Every book I read adds something to my internal ‘pot’ filling me up and expanding my mind.

Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest and who is your favourite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

I love A.M Johnson. She isn’t completely new as she has been published for a little under two years. I love her work, she writes lyrically and creates beauty.

My favourite author is Kristen Ashley, I’ve read nearly all her books and there is no one that can write an Alpha Male like her!

Fiona: Name one entity that you feel supported you outside of family members.

My Misfits. I have a ‘street team’ but I hate that term especially because I don’t expect my group to pimp – ever. So I call them a reader group. They’re on Facebook and are called Maria’s Misfits. I adore them, they support me through everything and I couldn’t do it without them!

Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?

I’d love to say yes, but I’m not sure I’ll ever make enough money to make a career from writing, but that’s okay, I write because I love to. That’s it. 🙂

Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

Not in my latest, but that’s because it’s going through editing right now, but I’m pretty sure most authors would change something within each of their books, I definitely would!

Fiona: Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

Just from being a reader.

Fiona: Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Here is my blurb for my upcoming book Dazed.

People say the heart wants what it wants and it will not be denied.

Those people are fools.

I’m a practiced hand at hiding from the world. The scars I bear are invisible to all but me and I use them to sustain the walls I’ve built around myself.

He knocked my simple life into disarray and infiltrated my carefully constructed defenses.

The tight control I maintain is at breaking point and ever since our eyes connected across a lunch hall my world has been off balance.

I can’t have him and he can’t have me.

I know it.

He knows it.

I’m just not sure that Tarrant Reigns has ever followed anyone’s rules.

Everything and everyone is against us.

Even his brother.

Caden brought us together, but now he’s standing in our way.

Fiona: Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Oh so many things, I would be here all day if I tried to list the challenges. But that’s the fun of it…right? 😉

Fiona: Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?

Only within the UK. I went to Dublin for a signing last year and I’ll be travelling the five hours up north to Newcastle this coming June for a signing. My first two series have just been picked up by a French publisher so there may be a need for me to travel to France for a signing in the future. I have been asked to a signing in the US but it’s just not feasible for me right now.

Fiona: Who designed the covers?

So far all my covers have been designed by Francessca at Francessca’s PR & Design.

Fiona: What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Promoting it and writing the blurb, I always struggle with both.

Fiona: Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

Always get a professional editor and sometimes you need to step away and take a break.

Fiona: If any of your books was made into a film who would you like to play the lead?

Oooo that’s a hard one, I’m not sure I can answer that!

Fiona: Do you have any advice for other writers?

Take your time, love your work and do it for the love.

Fiona: Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Thank you.

I’m not sure I could ever put into words how it feels when someone tells me they love one of my books. I forever hold that feeling in my heart, so if they could take one thing away from me, it would be that they know just how much I appreciate them.

Fiona: What book are you reading now?

I’m re-reading The Golden Dynasty by Kristen Ashley. It’s one of my top 5 books ever and I re-read it a lot!

Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?

I don’t, but I can say the first book that ever stuck with me was George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dhal.

Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?

Lots of things. Books, music, films, real life.

Fiona: Is there one person past or present you would like to meet and why?

The main people I would like to meet are the ones that I interact with on social media on a daily basis, but they live far away or even in other countries. I would love one day to be able to hug those I consider my online family.

Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone and why?

She always tried to treat others how she wanted to be treated.

She died from the zombie apocalypse – she went down fighting.

Fiona: Other than writing do you have any hobbies?

I read too 🙂

Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?

Bad TV. Anything reality that most people wouldn’t give the time of day to, you can guarantee I’ll be watching. And funny TV – The Big Bang Theory for example.

Fiona: Favourite foods / Colours/ Music

Crisps / Purple / Everything.

Fiona: If you were not a writer what else would you like to have done?

I would love to be one of those people who travelled all over the world ‘testing’ holidays for companies.

Fiona: Do you have a blog/website? If so what is it?

Yes –
