Name

            Maurice Broaddus

Where are you from

Originally London, England.  But I’ve spent most of my life in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?

I was in high school when my teacher encouraged me to think about writing seriously.  He had introduced me to Poe after reading some of my (admittedly, angst-ridden) dark short stories.  I really caught the bug then

Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?

The Knights of Breton Court had its origins in a local ministry called Outreach Inc.  They work with homeless teenagers.  We were working on various art/writing projects and I was trying to get the kids to imagine themselves in different contexts.  What struck me was how they couldn’t imagine their lives past next week.  So I started imagining some of them caught up in a larger story.  What started out as a lark, eventually became a full blown novel.  Basically, the book is a re-telling of the legend of King Arthur except set in modern day Indianapolis, told through the eyes of homeless teenagers.  I call it “The Wire” meets “Excalibur”.

Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

That magic, like homelessness, is all around us if we choose to see it.

Fiona: How much of the book is realistic?

            The most terrifying parts.

Fiona: Who designed the covers?

Steve Stone designed the covers for the trilogy.  Joey Hi-Fi did the cover for the omnibus.  Needless to say, I’ve been blessed with great artists.

Fiona: What books have most influenced your life most?

The Collected Stories by Amy Hempel

Magic for Beginners by Kelly Link

The Yiddish Policemen’s Union/Gentlemen of the Road by Michael Chabon

Futureland by Walter Moseley

Sandman by Neil Gaiman and various artists

Watchmen/V for Vendetta/Marvelman by Alan Moore and various artists

Desperation by Stephen King

Right as Rain/Hell to Pay/Soul Circus by George Pelecanos

Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard

Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler

Books of Blood by Clive Barker

A New Kind of Christian by Brian McLaren

Fiona: What book are you reading now?

The Wise Man’s Fear by Patrick Rothfuss

Fiona: What are your current projects?

Well, my current projects all have NDAs attached to them.  They’re cool, I just can’t talk about them.

Fiona: Do you have any advice for other writers?

Keep writing.  It doesn’t get any easier, but you do get better at it.

Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone and why ?

Husband.  Father.  Friend. He rocked them all.

Fiona: Other than writing do you have any hobbies ?

I collect comic books.  And salt and pepper shakers.

Fiona: What TV shows do you enjoy watching?

Currently I’m enjoying Blacklist, Brooklyn 99 Empire, The Good Wife, Scandal, Dr. Who, Justifed.  I consume about 40 hours of tv a week.  So I binge watch A LOT (about to watch Sons of Anarchy, Walking Dead, Dexter, and Copper.  That should kill a couple weeks in February).  The Wire, Breaking Bad, The Shield, Homicide: Life on the Streets are among my favorite shows of all time though.

Fiona: If you were not a writer what else would you like to have done?

            Tap dancer.

Fiona: Do you have a blog/website? If so what is it?
