Fiona: Tell us your latest news?
WELL, I AM HONESTLY READY TO SEE 2014 GO. IT HAS BEEN A VERY TOUGH YEAR. IN LIKE A LION, BUT OUT LIKE A LAMB, THANKFULLY.
IN 2015 MY NEXT BOOK WILL BE COMING OUT. IT COMBINES CHARACTERS FROM MY FIRST BOOK, BETWEEN WORLDS (BK 1): THE FINE LINE, WITH CHARACTERS FROM MY SECOND BOOK, IDOLUM: VISIONS OF THE UNDONE. BETWEEN WORLDS (BK 2): THROUGH GLASS DARKLY IS A CRIME SUSPENSE NOVEL WITH PARANORMAL THROWN IN. THERE’S ALSO A CENTRAL ROMANCE, OF COURSE.
I AM ALSO SCHEDULED FOR THREE APPEARANCES IN BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA IN FEBRUARY.
Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?
I STARTED WRITING BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO WRITE. DOESN’T MAKE SENSE DOES IT? WELL, HERE’S WHAT I MEAN. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A STORYTELLER. WHEN I WAS IN GRADE SCHOOL MY BEST FRIEND AND I WOULD TELL ONE ANOTHER STORIES AND CREATE SKITS AND PUPPET SHOWS. WHEN I BECAME A TEENAGER I GOT INVOLVED WITH PUPPETS AT CHURCH AND THAT JUST DEVELOPED THE URGE TO WRITE EVEN FURTHER. WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL I WROTE MY FIRST NOVEL. AFTER THAT IT WAS POETRY AND RESEARCH PAPERS.
I CREATE BECAUSE IT’S A NEED. I HAVE PLENTY OF WRITER’S BLOCK TO CONTEND WITH, BUT ONCE THE CLOUDS LIFT AND I CAN REALLY GO. IT’S A WAY TO GET ALL OF THE DARKNESS OUT OF ME I THINK. IN LIGHT OF RECENT EVENTS, THERE WILL BE SOME NOVELS EVENTUALLY COMING OUT ABOUT WHAT I’VE EXPERIENCED, IN FICTIONAL FORM THOUGH.
Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?
AT SIXTEEN WHEN I FINISHED MY FIRST NOVEL. I STILL HAVE THE BOOK. IN FACT, WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT I WILL EDIT IT AND SEND IT ON TO MY PUBLISHER.
Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?
THE ONE I WROTE WHEN I WAS SIXTEEN CAME FROM MY INTEREST IN THE LEGAL SYSTEM. HOWEVER, MY FIRST PUBLISHED BOOK, BW: THE FINE LINE, CAME FROM A HISTORICAL HOME ACROSS THE STREET FROM I WAS LIVING AT THE TIME. IT WAS REALLY STRANGE HOW IT HAPPENED. THERE WAS A VERY NASTY STORM AND ONE OF THE TREES IN THEIR YARD WAS STRUCK BY LIGHTENING. MY HUSBAND AND I WENT OVER TO TELL THEM AND THEY LET US COME INTO THE HOUSE. IT WAS A PERFECT SETTING FOR A GOOD GHOST STORY.
Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style?
I’M NOT REALLY SURE. I’VE BEEN TOLD THAT MY BOOKS ARE EASY READS. I HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD THAT THE SUSPENSE IN IDOLUM WAS SOMETIMES TOO MUCH. I DON’T WANT TO DO THAT TO PEOPLE. IT’S JUST THE WAY I WRITE. I WANT YOU TO THIRST FOR WHAT COMES NEXT!
Fiona: How did you come up with the title?
THE FINE LINE CAME FROM DEEP INSIDE OF ME. I WANTED TO EXPRESS HOW THIN THE VEIL IS BETWEEN THIS REALITY AND THE OTHER SIDE. THE BETWEEN WORLDS PART CAME FROM MY PUBLISHER.
IDOLUM WAS ONCE JUST CALLED UNDONE. HOWEVER, MY PUBLISHER AND I RESEARCHED A LATIN WORD FOR PHANTOM SINCE THE BOOK IS ABOUT A SERIAL KILLER CALLED “THE PHANTOM.” IDOLUM WAS BORN.
Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
I WANT TO ENTERTAIN. I WANT TO TAKE MY READERS INTO MY WORLD AND INTRODUCE THEM TO ENCHANTING CHARACTERS, BUT I ALSO WANT TO TOUCH MY READERS. EACH BOOK, INCLUDING THE NEXT ONE COMING OUT, ALWAYS HAS SOME SORT OF DARKNESS TO OVERCOME. I BELIEVE WE ALL FIGHT WITH OUR OWN DEMONS AND IT IS NICE TO SEE WHEN THEY CAN BE BEATEN.
Fiona: How much of the book is realistic?
BOTH BOOKS HAVE A TOUCH OF REALITY AND THROUGH GLASS DARKLY WILL BE NO DIFFERENT. I AM A PARANORMAL INVESTIGATOR AND HAVE SOME ABILITIES MYSELF. ALL OF THE BOOKS COULD REALLY HAPPEN, SO I SUPPOSE YOU COULD SAY HEY ARE VERY REALISTIC.
Fiona: Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
IN ALL OF THE BOOKS, THERE ARE PIECES OF MY OWN LIFE THROWN IN THERE. AND THEN THERE ARE PARTS THAT ARE COMPLETE FICTION.
Fiona: What books have most influenced your life most? a mentor?
I LOVE TERRI BLACKSTOCK’S WORK. SHE IS MY FAVORITE.
Fiona: What book are you reading now?
RIGHT NOW, NOTHING. IT’S STRANGE THAT I LOVE TO WRITE, BUT DON’T REALLY READ A LOT. IF SOMETHING GRABS ME I WON’T LET IT GO, BUT I’VE NEVER REALLY BEEN MUCH OF A READER TO BE QUITE HONEST.
Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
SIRENA ROBINSON IS A SPECTACULAR AUTHOR. I ACTUALLY READ HER BOOK BEFORE IT WAS PUBLISHED. ANOTHER AUTHOR THAT WILL BE COMING OUT EVENTUALLY IS JAYME RONAN. HE IS A CHILDHOOD FRIEND AND WE ARE ACTUALLY CO-AUTHORING THE 3RD BOOK IN THE BETWEEN WORLDS SERIES. I HAVE READ SOME OF HIS WORK, THOUGH, AND IT IS AWESOME!
Fiona: What are your current projects?
I AM WORKING WITH JAYME ON BETWEEN WORLDS (BK 3): TIME TORN ASUNDER. SO FAR IT IS A HISTORICAL ROMANCE, BUT SINCE IT IS IN ITS INFANCY THAT’S ALL I’M GOING TO SAY. I AM ALSO GOING OVER THE FINAL EDITS OF BW 2: THROUGH GLASS DARKLY WITH MY EDITOR.
Fiona: Name one entity that you feel supported you outside of family members.
MY PUBLISHERS HAVE BEEN SUPPORTIVE AND CREATIVE AND AWESOME. MY HOMETOWN HAS ALSO STEPPED UP. WHEN MY BOOKS CAME OUT THE LOCAL LIBRARY WHERE I GREW UP REALLY SUPPORTED ME. SORRY, I COULDN’T NAME JUST ONE.
Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?
I DO. BEFORE NOW I COULDN’T. BUT, SOMETHING HAPPENED RECENTLY THAT HAS MADE THAT POSSIBILITY A REALITY.
Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
NOT A THING.
Fiona: Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
PRETENDING AND PLAYING AS A CHILD. ALSO SOME PARANORMAL EXPERIENCES IN MY EARLY LIFE I WOULD SAY HAVE IMPACTED ME.
Fiona: Can you share a little of your current work with us?
AS I SAID, THROUGH GLASS DARKLY TAKES FROM BOTH OF MY NOVELS. THIS BOOK CENTERS AROUND OLIVIA GREGORY AND HER STRUGGLES. OLIVIA IS A MEDIUM AND SHE BASICALLY LOSES HER GIFTS BECAUSE SHE CHOSE A PATH THAT WASN’T HEALTH FOR HER. BUT, OF COURSE, WHATEVER IS LOST CAN BE FOUND.
TGD WILL ALSO TAP INTO THAT CRIMINAL ELEMENT AS WELL AS A LOVE TRIANGLE. I WANTED IT TO BE A SUSPENSEFUL SET UP, SIMILAR TO IDOLUM.
I ALSO AM THE CO-HOST OF A BLOGTALK RADIO SHOW CALLED THE PARANORMAL HOUR. I HOST WITH WILLOW CROSS. WE’LL BE BACK ON THE AIR IN JANUARY, SO WE’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT.
I DID A YEAR’S WORTH OF YOUTUBE EPISODES ALSO AND SORT OF DISCONTINUED IT AROUND THE FALL OF 2014. I’VE CONSIDERED STARTING THOSE BACK UP AGAIN, BUT I’M NOT REALLY SURE AT THIS POINT.
I ALSO PUBLISH A NEWLETTER IN APRIL, JULY, SEPTEMBER, AND DECEMBER. I AM ALWAYS SCOUTING FOR AUTHORS TO FEATURE FOR THAT NEWLETTER, SO I WILL BE DOING A CURTAIN CALL FOR THAT SOON.
Fiona: Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
GETTING THROUGH THE WRITER’S BLOCK IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE. I GET STARTED ON A PROJECT AND THEN SEEM TO DIE AT CERTAIN POINTS. THEN I GET IT TOGETHER AGAIN. IT TAKES ME A LONG TIME TO COMPLETE A BOOK. I’VE ALWAYS HAD THAT PROBLEM.
Fiona: Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?
TERRI BLACKSTOCK IS MY FAVORITE. I LOVE HOW SHE HAS THE ABILITY TO INCORPORATE CHRISTIANITY INTO HER WORK AND NOT BE PUSHY ABOUT IT. SHE ALSO PLUGS IN SUSPENSE WITH THAT.
Fiona: Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?
I WAS TRAVELING QUITE A BIT IN 2013. I HAVEN’T TRAVELED MUCH IN 2014, BUT I’M HOPING 2015 WILL BE DIFFERENT.
Fiona: Who designed the covers?
TC MCKINNEY, THE OWNER OF PDMI PUBLISHING, DESIGNED BOTH OF MY COVERS.
Fiona: What was the hardest part of writing your book?
STAYING WITH THE PROJECT WAS ONE OF THE HARDEST PARTS ABOUT THE BOOKS. BELIEVING THAT THEY WERE WORTH PUBLISHING WAS ANOTHER HURDLE. I STARTED BOTH OF MY PUBLISHED BOOKS IN 2008 AND THEY CAME OUT IN 2013 IF THAT TELLS YOU ANYTHING.
Fiona: Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
I LEARNED THAT IF I DREAMT BIG ENOUGH ANYTHING WAS POSSIBLE. I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A PUBLISHED AUTHOR BUT NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD ATTAIN IT. I WAS WRONG. I’M GLAD I WAS WRONG.
Fiona: Do you have any advice for other writers?
DON’T GIVE UP. MY PLATFORM IS “DREAM BIG.” IT’S SIMPLE, BUT IT’S TRUE. IF YOU CAN DREAM, YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING.
Fiona: Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?
OH MY. NOT REALLY.
Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?
IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH TO MAKE ME LAUGH. AS FAR AS CRYING, I’VE CRIED MORE THAN MY FAIR SHARE THIS PAST YEAR AND I’M A BIT TIRED OF IT.
Fiona: Is there one person pass or present you would meet and why?
THE LIST IS FAR TOO LONG. LOL!
Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone and why ?
INTERESTING QUESTION. BUT, I WON’T HAVE A HEADSTONE. I AM BEING CREMATED. LOL!
Fiona: Other than writing do you have any hobbies ?
NOT REALLY. I KNOW, BORING… RIGHT?
Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?
ANYTHING FUNNY IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME. I HATE HORROR MOVIES. A FRIEND OF MINE EVEN COMMENTED ON WHY IN THE WORLD I WRITE HORROR WHEN I CAN’T STAND TO WATCH A HORROR MOVIE. IT’S DIFFERENT I GUESS. I LIKE CRIME SHOWS ALSO. I’M NOT MUCH FOR ROMANCE EITHER. I LIKE THE SHOW DEXTER, TOO. I JUST STARTED WATCHING IT A FEW MONTHS AGO ON NETFLIX AND I’M HOOKED!
Fiona: Favorite foods / Colors/ Music
FOODS… I’M A DIABETIC SO I’M NOT REALLY ALLOWED TO HAVE FAVORITE FOODS. HOWEVER, I DO. I LOVE SWEETS (DOESN’T IT FIGURE?). I ALSO LIKE EARTH TONE COLORS; ANYTHING NATURAL. I LIKE A WIDE VARIETY OF MUSIC, SO I CAN’T REALLY PIN ANYTHING DOWN THERE EITHER.
Fiona: If you were not a writer what else would you like to have done?
WELL, I HAD THE CAREER I WANTED. I WAS A SUPERVISOR IN CHILD WELFARE FOR ALMOST NINE YEARS AND BECAUSE I WAS A WRITER, I WAS KICKED OFF OF THAT PATH BY SOME PRETTY AWFUL PEOPLE. AS I SAID, PLENTY OF GREAT MATERIAL TO WRITE ABOUT.
I ALSO DREAMED OF BEING A SINGER AND AN ACTRESS. HONESTLY, I WAS ALL ABOUT THE ARTS GROWING UP. BAND AND ART AND SHOW CHOIR. ANYTHING CREATIVE WAS RIGHT UP MY ALLEY.
Fiona: Do you have a blog/website? If so what is it?
